In the constellation of Guillermo Scott Herren alias, Piano Overlord is probably one of the lesser-used and more obscure ones, especially considering that, until 2012, THE SINGLES COLLECTION, was the one of the few places to uncover the sound. And while many of his other aliases have a distinct identity, Piano Overlord shows bits and pieces of Herren's work all over the place: Prefuse 73's instrumental hip-hop on "Walk Home" and "Stay Home" to the Savath & Savales' moody meditations on ""Spring's Arrival" and "Spring's Demise" to the Delarosa & Asora's angular IDM on "Agorophobia." But no matter what the style, Herren's production stays crisp throughout, as on the percussive frenzy of "Running JCH For All His Beats And Jewels" to the delicacy of "Triste Maita" and the gentle jazz of "You Stole My Stereo Outro." Diplo brings a more upbeat sensibility to his remix, "Electric Manatee Final Mixdown," while Adventure Time offers up a sampledelic dublab take with "The Overlord Meets The Adventure Time In Sleepy Keys." Some vocalists offer up their talents by rapping over "Agorophobia" and "No Community," but I think the originals are fine as is. Meanwhile, bow to your new piano overlords.
