Along with Nirvana and Pearl Jam Soundgarden was one of the groups from Seattle who in 1991 by broke with the solid rock sound that soon called ' grunge '. Of all the most Soundgarden grunge groups leaned on the classic rock sound of Black Sabbath (the heavy guitar riffs) and Led Zeppelin (the voice of frontman Chris Cornell). From the album Superunknown (1994) the Group sold an estimated nine million copies. The accessible single Black Hole Sun was, thanks to the surrealist video clip, even a top-40 hit. In 1996 the group fell apart. Drummer Matt Cameron left for Pearl Jam and Cornell founded with members of Rage Against The Machine the Group Audioslave. In 2010 the best known occupation of the group came back together for a reunion and comeback album King Animal.
