A fantastic album. Early Little Feat sounding right on point throughout the entire record. It's solid, rocking and soulful as all hell, a record filled with truth and raw beauty. In my opinion, if Lowell George had more of a say in this record, it more than definitely would be residing in the 'legendary' category for most I'm sure.

★★★☆☆☆ Nice gem here. Lowell George, Bill Payne, Roy Estrada and Ritchie Hayward later to become famous with Little Feat backs the still to remain infamous singer Nolan Porter. Recorded in early 1971 at about the same time Little Feat was making their own debut-release, the Little Feat founders may have been in need of money, but they shure laid down all their usual skills for this session. The music is tight, swinging and has the usual mix of R&B, blues and southern rock that would later sound familiar on Little Feat's own records. Randy Newman's "Let's Burn Down The Cornfield" and Don Covay cover "Iron Out The Rough Spots" are the higlights, sounding just as Little Feat would have done them - except for Nolan Porters competent but forgettable vocals, that are neither R&B nor rock. Had only Lowell George been given that job too. In fact, Lowell George and Bill Payne even contributes an original song, "Somebody's Gone", that is far better than any other original on the album and one can't help thinking why producer Gabriel Mekler did not let the four Little Feat'ers take over the whole session. Looking back - at his Lizard label and at the career Little Feat had with Warner Bros he must have had at least sorta that feeling haunting the Decca headquarters during the Beatles era.
