★★★★★★ Jazz album of the year in 1972 according to the Down Beat readers. Though they were likely softened by the fact that Rushing had passed away not long after the album was released in 1971 retrospectively it's it's fair to call this a little vocal jazz masterpiece. The big-band, blues shouting Mr. Five By Five is cought in his careers most intimate setting and atmosphere, not with screaming brass but with soft saxes and intimate backing, sometimes so diminished it's close to acapella. With so many great big band performances on record, the intimate swan song album makes a perfect story, and having "Thanks a Million" lead to the album run out seems like Rushing knew this was his last recordings. A personal favorite of mine and previously 5 out of 5 stars in Rolling Stones Record Guide.
