After hearing John Peel play The Residents' version of Satisfaction on his late night show around 1978, I ran to the railway station the very next day and got a train into the nearest town to buy Third Reich n' Roll. My mother had instructed me 'not to buy any more records' but as she was going out for a couple of hours I saw the window of opportunity opening wide.By the time she got back.... so had I. I was probably watching Pebble Mill At One with an innocent look on my face.In those days my mother used to get so upset about my vinyl habit that she would freak out quite badly. I didn't understand the problem... I was working, had no debts, no other bad habits and wasn't stealing to support my 'addiction'.I would come into the house on a Saturday after a morning's record shopping, having just dumped my bags in the garage... and then walk into the house empty-handed. "No records today son?" she would ask, "nothing for me today" I replied, retrieving the records later.Anyway, where was I? Oh, this album .... well, when I got it back home I was puzzled. I wanted more of that extreme distorted screaming/'singing' that was Satisfaction's main attribute. I mean, they totally destroyed that song. That was much more 'punk' than any of the current bands at the time.It has taken me a while (about 40 years actually) to get to grips with this strange and unsettling album. Like someone said - it's very familiar whilst simultaneously sounding like nothing you've ever heard before. It was fun puzzling out what songs were covered... and every time I listened to the thing it seemed to sound different somehow. I don't know how they achieved that. It's remarkable really. I really think it's alive and evolving in some way.A peerless album, it floats freely in vertical space-time, unfettered by commercial restraints. Along with King Tubby and The Homosexuals, The Residents were masters of utilising the studio desk as a musical instrument.

So, the front cover says "THIS side explains why Hitler Was A Vegetarian" and the back says "THIS side is usually Swastikas On Parade". So the cover makes it seem like "Hitler Was.." is actually side A but "Swastikas on Parade" is the track that starts with the German "Twist Again" which is generally regarded as the beginning of the album. SO.... have we all been playing side two first by mistake and all CDs, etc were pressed wrong? I'm going by the first pressing artwork and labels here.

Anyone wanna sell this or trade for some rare vinyl? I got a lot of first pressings of a lot of old bands, and new. So Hit me up. I wanna take some good ol' lesergic and go to the land of flowing milk castles, floating in the sky, spinning slowly from a rotating machine, where bits of oil and tar seep out, and slowly destroy this shit from the outside in and inside out...I got some sealed rare shpongle. limited to 400-500. I got both luckily but unfortunately my friend passed away and I have 2 extra ones to sell/trade. Shooting this out there fucking in all genre's. Lil uzi very, yung thug, the music tapes, of montreal, NiN, Ozzy, I actually got some first pressing of many black sabbath vinyls. And guns and roses. The one with the robot rapes the chick. It was only on the US shelves for like a week. Shit is rare and in NM condition. Send me a message if you really wanna talk business. I have these very amazing sounds shpongle "are you shpongled"? albums, 1 black(500made) and 3 clear (400 made). I swear I only wanted two but shit went down. Remember I'm down to trade fosho fosho. or made trade and sell/buy( but it would have to be like 50 bucks on a 500 vinyl along wit the shpongle. I know peope won't be buying that much now(duh! Holidays! So fucking be patient and make that long term money!) but it will be worth the investment.I'm done, this shit has gone as far as I'm willing to take it atm. I could go on but no.......no. I can not!Peace and love all! I'll be pasting this in rare spots in discogs so I can see whats up! I'm not greedy! I just want both of us to be happy with what we get 1000%

To this very day it remains a classic album. Bought it in the summer of 77, filed under easy listening. As the owner of the store had no idea, he thought it was a German 40´s album.

Did anyone ever play this record at 45 rpm? Sounds as if some parts were intentionally played and recorded slower than the composition originally was.
  • Whiteseeker
yes that was the intention. song within a song basically.

I bought this album in 1978 which must have been the 2nd pressing. Inside was a questionaire printed on a sheet of pink paper.... or maybe it was a Weirdo mailing list application...I can't exactly remember what it was (it's so long ago) but I filled it out promptly and returned it to The Residents. A few weeks later, just before Xmas 1978, I recieved a free copy of the Santa Dog 78 7" in the post. Sweet guys. There was also a similar insert enclosed with Fingerprince. After that I received regular Buy Or Die catalogues from the band.
