It was Bob Dylan who gave him the confidence to write his own songs, but it was the American rhythm & blues from the fifties who had enchanted him as young boy. Yusuf Islam-born Stephen Demetre Georgiou in 1948 as and in the 1960s became known under the pseudonym Cat Stevens-bringing with Tell 'Em I'm Gone (2014) an ode to his childhood heroes Leadbelly, Howlin' Wolf and Jimmy Reed. To do this, he r&b a number of covert-classics, but also songs of Procol Harum and Edgar Winter. The album produced by Rick Rubin knows so numbers of different origin, but that forms in the hands of the singer/songwriter is a whole. With interesting guests as Tinariwen, Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Richard Thompson at his side, Yusuf makes his own restrained and acoustic version of the rhythm & blues. And that is mainly about spiritual freedom. According to him, a theme that can be found in the spirituals that were once sung on slave plantations, the rhythm of his youth and his own folk & blues. Yusuf sounds anno 2014 as a wise counselor who hopes to free his listeners.

Still in great voice. A bit "bluesier" than his other recent releases. Stand out tracks are "Cat & The Dog Trap" and "Doors".
