In 1997, Sebastian Hoff was only 21, I'm not sure what inspiration or equipment he gained in 1997, but EVERY track and remix he did that year are some of the best examples of Hardcore Techno. So it's lucky for us, two of his best productions are on this vinyl. Beat Ya Brain takes all of Promo's productions tricks: bouncy Promo kickdrum, filtered kickdrums dancing all over the place, super hard Hip Hop lyrics, nice breakbeats, complex drum patterns and haunting Juno snyths. Its well produced and sounds great. Probably what sets this track apart from his other great productions at the time is the crunchy as fuck kickdrum pounding the middle section. Amazing track!Beat Ya Brain (Again) is an alternate version of the A1 track, in that the crunchy kickdrums are absent and there is more of an emphasis on the Alpha Juno synth riffs. It's still a stellar effort by Mr Hoff, but it's not as stunning as Beat Ya Brain. If Beat Ya Brain (Again) was on any other record, it would be the bomb track, that's how awesome Promo was in 1997.Methodz Of Madness heavily samples Jamal - Fades Em All. Wow, just when you think Beat Ya Brain can't be topped, flip the record over and listen to a beautiful Gabber track called Methodz Of Madness. It takes all the aforementioned production tricks to another level, the track is constantly progressing, relentless and utterly enthralling. The icing on the cake is the angelic vocals in the last breakdown, its uplifting and further adds to the atmosphere of the track. Wow!I almost feel sorry for Rock Da House after hearing the first 3 songs on this record. Almost. It's actually the least interesting Promo track you'll ever hear. On a slightly related note, Jamal - Fades Em All became more popular in Hip Hop because it was blessed with a Pete Rock remix. Pete Rock is a legendary Hip Hop producer who (like DJ Promo in the Hardcore scene) was able to take a track, remix it and make the track sound better. With this in mind, you now understand the sample "I'm doper than the Pete Rock remixes" on Hardcore To Da Bone (Masters Of Ceremony Dope Mix) :)When Promo toured Australia in 2003, I told him I bought Beat Ya Brain for 75 Dutch Guilders, he said to me: "you got ripped off!"Maybe the best Hardcore record of 1998?
