I don't know anyone that would classify Van Morrison as Funk/Soul. One of the most influential & greatest artists to Blues/Rock scene has played & recorded with all the greats since the 60's. He's has dozens of classic recordings to his credit he's done solo.

it's just that discogs groups both funk and soul into the same genre. can't choose one without the other. it's more acknowledging his soulful / soul side.

Indeed, mate! Thats the same I wanted to say too. What else wasn´t "Funky" in the 70s?? Even Led Zeppelin had their "funky moments" on some of their tracks. But more than that, what I also wanted to add, its the fact that you have first to think in terms of the music then, to understand "everything was funky then". I mean, if you look to 99% of the bands in the 70s, there was no such a strict categories like today the people has now. If you were playing then Jazz-Fusion, you will also find some "blues pentatonic scales and flavour" in your stuff, because Jazz & Blues & Funk was everywhere present then. Its was also much more "crossover style music" then, I think. Todays music is in this sense much more segregated, "clean" or more stylish depurated, in absolute contrast to the 70s music, more raw or less develop in their styles and concepts. Then, it was much less definied everything. IMO, thats began to crack begin of the 80s, as everyone followed their paths and music directions, and every band just developed their ideas and styles further, whats drove the whole thing to many and many music courses and styles, everyone of them interesting, but also isolate from the whole "rock & pop primitive way to create a song or band sound", that we also had so oft in the 60s. But, its just me and my own theories. Cheers!

So much of his best 70s music has elements of soul. I mean, c'mon, Jackie Wilson Says is an all-time soul great.
