I remember buying this KN 12" back in 1984 and playing it at our high school dances when I used to DJ - the full 9-minute-plus epic mix is the only way to go - it builds, and breaks, and blows up - the Carmichael/Adams mix is where tuff 80s electro meets soul boogie and Fonda Rae's searing vocals soar over the top to seal the deal. Truly one of the most sublime 12" jams of the decade - somewhat underground, but later remade/covered by Cathy Dennis in a much more pop vein to score a Top 40 hit. But this original is the only version that matters.

Hi Bruce, historic job. Now I got curious of the rough mixes. ;)T

Um, Patrick and Greg Carmichael did produce the track, but I mixed it. Pat is an amazing producer and I did a lot of work with him, but this sounded very different until I got my hands on it. It was my second remix ever, and I tested rough mixes at both Better Days and King Street before writing "Final" on the tape. Not to take anything away from Pat and Greg, but if you like what this track sounds like, that has a lot to do with me, and my engineer at the time, Julian Herzfeld. No offense intended. B)

But this original is the only version that matters. I'm so sick of how much Cathy Dennis get's beat up for re-writing & covering this track.Wasn't someone called Shep Pettibone that handled the music side too ?And any way the two 'original writers' get a Co-Credit on her remake.Fonda Rae's other version, I LOve the first half, what can I say, it goes off a tangent I'd rather it didn't...And any way pt.2, this sorta thing happens all bloody time, so why knock lumps out of someone.Funny how much Loleatta Holloway was SO universally LOved after Black Box ?
