And here we have one of the more random additions to my CD collection. ‘The Riddle’, released in 1999, is a dance song by Italian DJ Gigi D’Agostino, which uses samples of 80’s pop icon Nik Kershaw’s hit of the same name. I first heard this song whilst on holiday visiting family in Germany way back in ’99 or 2000, where it was a pretty big hit. It grew on me then, and it’s still pretty catchy today.The song itself is very simple and typical of dance music; upbeat rhythms with catchy hooks and plenty of autotuned vocals. Is this Gigi himself singing? Is it Nik Kershaw’s vocals with various effects? Or someone totally different? I don’t know. I don’t really care either. It’s an innocent enough track and it does its job. Why question it?As is always the case with singles however... a video mix, a single cut, and an original mix... What’s the point in that? While there are slight differences between the three, they are all ultimately the same song, in which case the only one really worth caring about it the original mix. Then there’s the “original longer mix” (good God, do we need this?). It’s basically a different song with the main melody played repetitively. It’s catchy as well though! So no harm done there! Though it’s still a little pointless.Overall, this isn’t really anything massively noteworthy, and unless you’re a fan of the great Gigi himself (I don’t really know anything about him so I can’t comment), there’s no point owning this. Like I said, it’s a random (yet harmless) addition to my collection.
