I never can figure out what the point of these tiny releases are/were. It's an artist just flipping the bird to countless thousands of dedicated fans, which then trickles down to being only the insiders, and only those with the most money to spend on rare issues. Latter day fans - people who never heard of Hawtin or whomever until years after the publication of the music are just SOL. It's artsy and it makes whatever meaningless proof against commercialism you may wish to make - but how is your art supposed to survive, exactly? Release this stuff for the masses. Release all recordings for the masses. If the elite few want special reserve experiences, they can go to live shows.

Concept 1, composed by Richie Hawtin, marks a year long correlation between musical development and the progression of time. The original series of 12 monthly twelve-inch singles comprised of 24 tracks, was strictly limited to 2000 copies per release. As with the music, the stripped down product design evolved into a finalized identity. The highly sought after final release (12:96) was packaged in a special custom box (limited to 1000) to hold all twelve singles. The music was a timely emission of that moment- each single was usually composed just weeks prior to its release. This compilation is a reflection of the body of work within those twelve months of development. Only listeners who collected the project during the time of release will be able to see the full picture of Concept 1. 96:CD contains one bonus track in addition to previously unreleased movements from the original sessions.
