I wanted to try my hand at grindcore for a change and pulled out this disc, which has a couple of things going for it: an attractive cover, bass-drums-no guitars instrumental set up (with a chick bass player to boot), plus a band name lifted from an AUTOPSY song. They are a snotty bunch, though, with silly, rudimentary X-rated song titles and slovenly attitude. They did manage to nail a pair of amusing puns ("Emmanuel Cunt" and "Lonely Cunt's Club") alongside the more absurdist but typical wordplay ("Sneezerection", "Popcorn & Cockporn"), so a point or two could be donated for creativity of sort. More audacious was their decision to cover two, uh, tunes of a certain Tchaikovsky. One of them, "Nightgales & Pigs", is more of an intro really, but the second, "Baba Yaga (Sorceress)", gets a full grind treatment. You gotta love the disclaimer on the back cover: "All Musick By NxVx, Except Track 1 & 2 By P.I. Tchaikovskiy". Did P.I. Tchaikovsky start spinning in his grave as these discs were rolling off the pressing plant? A rhetorical question, no doubt, and that is the point, I am sure. But from what we know about the man, he was never a member of the cunt club. Luckily, the NxVx got this other corner covered, well kind of, with the track "She Is A Dick", so all is well. But anyway, NxVx are the ones on trial here, so let's move on.The band is essentially a duo of bassist Maria "Shurshunchik" and drummer Alexey "Yolka", although there is a vocalist present on this particular recording. In that respect, they bring out associations with the Estonian death metal duo NEOANDERTALS, who have reverse gender roles in their line-up. In a way, NxVx also serve as a grind parallel to the above mentioned band due in no small part to Maria's reserved attitude with regards to the usage of distortion. The difference is that unlike NxVx, who still appear to resort to at least some assistance of effects, NEOANDERTALS, in their quest for an utterly inner-purist approach, shun distortion entirely. Plus, being a serious aberration on the brutal death metal landscape, they are more technically superior and compositionally complex than NxVx could ever hope to be, which, I suppose, is to be expected anyway. That is not to say that NxVx go about their business without any quirks what so ever. Yet their scope is way modest, all things considered, and whatever idiosyncratic snippets the band manage to emit are nothing too far out that you had no chance to hear from the left-field wing of the Czech grind scene. Having said that, I suppose I can still recommend this disc to the genre fans without too many "ifs" and "buts" because it would meet expectations while delivering a few somewhat interesting detours. Genre conventions like song formats, requisite samples, blasts, variety of throat burning are being followed, with the latter two providing much of brutality in the wake of distortion being reined in. And while Maria is not the most versatile player and won't soon qualify for the job as the next ORIGIN or BRAIN DRILL bottom end string keeper, she holds her own in the context of the chosen style, exhibits a bit of chops and versatility and does not shun away from a chance or two to playfully attempt to expand her spectrum. She does not really attempt to play chords and mostly sticks to the note runs around the fret board, and, in-between the normal grind going-ons, intermittently lays down short groove sequences, a few punk and crust influenced lines and even a couple of vaguely melodic licks and oddball notations borrowed from somewhere outside of the metal neighborhood. Drumming is very basic and does not distinguish itself by any flashes of inventiveness and technicality. Production job of a garage variety is nothing to write home about either, and, during a number of fully fast and blasting parts, contributes to the album's scaling down at least half way into the noise territory, burying the bass underneath percussive barrages. Luckily, this does not turn out to be a fully encompassing affliction. Finally, vocalist Roman "Umka" additionally plants small pockets of occasional yelps and squeals, reminiscent of some demented cartoon characters, next to the vomit stream of your usual screams and belches. Despite some good ideas from Maria, the album's overall impression is shaky due to the subpar sound and Yolka's questionable drum skills. Attempts at discussing any possibly deeper facets here naturally remain outside the door, as everything the band have to offer is right there in the open, in front of your nose, much like that piece of vaginitis on the front cover. But all in all, my take on "Pussymist" is not entirely pessimist. Just don't laugh at my stupid pun. It pretty much corresponds to the level of shit the band themselves throw out there (yea, I know, many bands do the exact same thing), even if they really do get off on P. I. Tchaikovsky.
