Notes

Translation of German liner notes

Insert 1

"The MAUERHARFE was created at the turn of the year 1989/90. The Wall between the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany had stood, among other places, in Zimmerstrasse. And cut right through a city.
When it fell, the "Mauerspechte" (a term used for private people who hammered small pieces out of the Wall, ed.) came around and, with delight and brightful eyes, hacked the concrete out of the L-shaped segments.
A bulky structure remained, with its steel armoring rods sticking out wildly. Steel and concrete already started to sound, to grate and moan.
With piano wires, magnetic pickups, amplifiers, speakers and a lot of steel bending and tensioning an instrument was created, out of which came those sounds, noises, sighs and moans which are familiar to bad dreams."

Insert 2

"The MAUERHARFE was brought to resonance at venues in front of "Wall-StreetGallery" in Zimmerstrasse and as part of other art venues.
It later removed to Lindenstrasse for the venue "Mauerblüten", at which the co-author of the manifesto "Aufbruch 89 - Neues Forum", Jens Reich, was a speaker.
There, and in autumn 1990 in front of "Kommunale Galerie der DDR" in Friedrichstrasse, the recordings at hand were made. The concerts were also attended by former military border guards. They were touched and expressed their relief that, from such a hated symbol, musical sounds could be produced too.

The MAUERHARFE, weighing 2.5 metric tons after all, was removed to Potsdamer Platz, and this haulage terminated its short life. The crane and truck gear had cut the piano wires and deformed the structure so much that it was beyond repair.

The sound of the MAUERHARFE revokes the loss of freedom and dignity, torture, and all prisons and places where suppression is executed."
