Under rated film w a generally fun soundtrack . Great title tune or tunes , as we get not two takes but 2 diff songs , the hit version excellent uptempo w real swaggerin' elvis. Another cool entry is Once is Enough , wish bobby Darin picked up on it. Catchin' on fast is not the movie version (trailor version?) but is a funky little gem, w a dynamite electric piano . Very hip stuff . We also have some mildly entertaining plot numbers , u know the names . As I understand , the music was cut in Nashville but the vocals cut in Hollywood. A shame they couldn't get a decent mix on some of the tracks . One blah ballad here was not used in the picture .Bonus tracks pretty good . ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Where does one begin when reviewing this album? Up and until this point in Elvis career, his soundtrack recordings even at their silliest still had a professional sound. Elvis seemed to make even the most inane songs ("Ito Eats" from "Blue Hawaii", "No Room to Rhumba in a Sports Car" from "Fun In Acapulco", etc.) palatable. Here the roof caves in on the professionalism and Elvis' performances. The album starts with the first version of the title song that is played over the opening credits of the film. Bad lyrics along with vocals that sound as if Elvis recorded the track in a bathroom while the band played two rooms down the hall equal the worst Elvis title track to this point. I will give this track 1 ½ stars (out of five) and that is extremely generous. "Smokey Mountain Boy" follows and the Jordanaires drowned out Elvis with very annoying whistling on a song in which Elvis sings about catching a big old grizzly bear (1 ½ stars). "There's Gold in the Mountains" is up next and while not a great track it is substantially better than the first two. Still the production on the track is very poor and the best I can give it is 2 1/2 stars. Perhaps Elvis' worst movie ballad is the 4th track on the A-side. "One Boy, Two Little Girls" is a horribly written song about an insipid topic (a boy that loves two girls and has to decide which one to marry???). Elvis tries his best to sing it sincerely, but it comes off as unintentionally funny (1 star). "Catchin’ On Fast" is a short brisk "rocker” that fails to go anywhere (2 stars) and side A ends with a nicely rendered ballad, “Tender Feeling" (3 stars). Side B starts with a ballad recorded for the movie, but not included in it. "Anyone (Could I Fall In Love)" is a nice song that Elvis sings in a very soft voice. So soft, he is barely audible in parts of it. It is a nice start however to side B and it is worthy of 3 stars. Unfortunately this nice beginning is followed by one of the worse if not the worst track of Elvis' career. "Barefoot Ballad" is a complete mess of a song. With lines about the toes connecting and kicking your shoes off to kick your blues off, the words are as bad as the performance. Elvis played two characters, a brunette Army sergeant and a blonde hillbilly. In the scene where he sings this song he is the blonde hillbilly and he sings this atrocity in a phony country accent. The song is horrible and I feel embarrassed for Elvis whenever I see this scene or hear this song (0 stars). "Once Is Enough" is a passable up-tempo number with a nice message (2 1/2 stars) and the soundtrack portion of the LP ends with the single version of "Kissin' Cousins". A decent track that in the movie is a duet between the two Elvis characters so again part of it is sung with the hokey accent (2 1/2 stars). The album is completed with two bonus songs that are heads and shoulders above most any of the material from the movie. A nice ballad "Echoes Of Love" (3 1/2 stars) and "Long Lonely Highway" (4 stars) a nice up-tempo number were both recorded in May of 1963 for an album that was never released. It is a shame that as the Beatles stormed America, this was the Elvis album that RCA and Colonel Parker released. It amazingly hit #6 on the Billboard Album Chart and spent 31 weeks on that chart. That means a lot of people bought this substandard LP and it led to more lethargic soundtrack LP's over the next several years. A two star album thanks to the bonus songs, but without a doubt one of the three worst of Elvis' career (see "Harum Scarum" and "Paradise, Hawaiian Style").
