Dj Trace - Mutant Revisited samples Epoch 90- There Can Only Be One . The opening sample to this tune. And what a tune DJ Trace delivers. Outstanding! https://www.discogs.com/Epoch-90-VLSI-Heaven/release/151939

Everything changed for me with this one. Trace dropped Mutant Revisited in Chicago in early 1996 in a big, dark and dirty mafia warehouse; jaws hit the floor. Like tearing flesh off the bone, really redefined the sound in the Midwest as things went darkstep/techstep right quick, particularly in Chicago. Voracious appetites followed as the tunes shifted to bleak and bleaker. Liberty 1 is also amazing. Both tunes have stood the test of time for me - they're so powerful on a huge system. A highlight among many highlights in Trace's discography.

agreed, sloofman. liberty 1 is after all this time, my favorite techstep song. it also first appeared on the "tech steppin'" compilation on s.o.u.r. records in the summer of '96, and was basically the start of the whole techstep wave that took over the latter half of that year. sure, you have the mutant jazz remix that came in september '95, but the tech steppin' compilation is where everyone knew that something new was about to take over.

just for clarification, by "mutant jazz remix", i mean just that, the actual mutant jazz remix by trace of t.power's original work. not "revisited" that came later.

Whilst everyone cites Mutant Revisited as a classic track which may well have been a vital part of the early techstep scene, listening again Liberty 1 is a far more interesting track. With a tearing amen and far more bottom end experimentation, Liberty 1 echoes the best moments of the Torque album on No-U Turn.

Trace's Mutant Revisited is a seminal track, the aftershocks of which are still being felt in the scene today in 2002. When people talk about "dark" or "darkside" drum n bass this is the sound they are refering to. The time of its release (1996) it also helped further define Drum n Bass from its Jungle origins, and for those a little more pedantic practically blueprinted the Tech-Step sound. This particular track has been remixed by some of the most important next generation tech-steppers. Namely Stakka & Skynet (Underfire), Bad Company (BC), Black Sun Empire (DSCi4), Concord Dawn (DSCi4), Kemal (Cryptic Audio) and Shimon (Ram). Some of which are still eagerly awaiting release.
