The story of this famous British new-romantic/neo-salsa band began with all those early days of punk music. In those times they were called as The Leyton Buzzards and were playing the simple punk/new wave stuff. The Leyton Buzzards were one of the first London bands who were signed to now cult label Small Wonder. Their first single was “19 & Mad” – three-chord number with strong punk guitar hooks. The second (or third, I don’t remember) and the most successful work of The Leyton Buzzards was “Saturday Night Beneath The Plastic Palm Trees” (to those times the band were signed to major label Chrysalis) – the great white-reggae composition with very interesting lyrics. Unfortunately the punk audience was not attracted by their music because there was more pop than punk flavor in their songs, and also the pop-music-fans didn’t buy the Leyton Buzzards records too – too loud and fast for pop. After two or three unsuccessful singles (the covers to them were painted by Terry Gilliam from Monty Python – who was the good friend of the band) the band decided to change their name to the Modern Romance and started to orient on the more stylish and more fashionable music. The first work under this moniker was the single simply called “The Modern Romance” – good example of the pop-new-wave music with curios lyrics. Sadly this song was failed in charts, the second 45’s was failed too, but after the band tried to hesitate to the fashion new-romantic style and recruited brass section, the third single called “Everybody Salsa” headed on the UK charts. “The Great Gatsby” band image with white suits circa 1930 The Golden Age Of Jazz generated the fashion on Modern Romance music. After the bestseller long-play “Adventures In Clubland” the guys became the world pop-stars.
