The Young Knives - Something Awful EP flac mp3 download

I can only wonder what some collector who just snapped up whatever they could on Record Store Day might think about this EP. It fits in perfectly with the constantly surprising trajectory Young Knives have maintained since their first EP, but might be just that bit too challenging for the average listener. The dynamic 'Something Awful' is same as the album version on Sick Octave, but the other tracks are all special to this EP. 'Something Sweet' follows in the vaguely robotic noise of the opening track, but brings in House of Lords (bassist and brother to lead-singer/guitarist Henry Dartnall) on a tense, anger-fuelled vocal, 'Something Tragic' opens the flipside with the kind of machine sound likely to make a listener thing their equipment's malfunctioning, but continues in the experimental vein Knives have been exploring recently with a haunting spoken vocal from Henry. The whole thing wraps up by a neat segue into 'Something Cheap,' which is the most accessible, only back-to-basics guitars-and-drums piece on here, and a perfect step-off from a fascinating listen.If the EP weren't already worth the price of admission, Knives have added the bonus of an entertaining and informative zine with Knives members as well as guest writers and artists (my personal favourite is the article on Don Covay, but every reader will find their own item to love, assuredly) covering a variety of subjects.
