To this day, "The Comforts of Madness" remains one of my favorite albums. There are shoegaze bands who sold more records, who got more press in NME & Melody Maker, and who are more frequently cited as influences on contemporary bands, but let's not sell the Pale Saints short. You would be hard pressed to find a more cohesive shoegaze album from start to finish. A treasure of the 4AD catalog!

They straddled. With albatross wings. They were a wee bit twee, blatantly psych, faintly Stone Roses-y in the anthemic stakes on a couple of numbers but mostly ecstatic dream pop and introverted 80's era Leeds indie genius. I will never part with this album it is a treasure and stands up head and shoulders against (whilst casually pissing all over) the over-zealous po-faced dross made today. Under-rated debut classic. Shame that it's Lush re-forming and not them? For Lush's debut had not a song to match anything here. Word.
