It's intresting how a piece of music can make you think of a particular period in your life.How your memory works.When I first put on this CD,I felt like I was transformed back to my teens.It also made me think of The Doors and Sex Pistols.This band is not a new comer;they've been playing since the early 80's.I was curious to see how singing about faeries would feel like from a dark hearted band.It's not one of those new age CDs for sure.Influenced by a great mixture of styles from punk to opera,you certainly get an intresting sound as you listen to the tracks."Lake Of Faeries" has been produced by Bazie(from 69 Eyes).Like the CD cover shows,the world they create is the image of faeries living a black and white life near the lake.It's punkish,it's magical,it's sweet,and it's naughty and unusual indeed. Harlots of Beyond have been around for quite a while and have released many albums in Europe,but 2005's "Lake of Faeries"is the band's first ever UK release ,sounding like a cross between the Misfits,the Distillers and Hansel and Gretyl,Harlots of Beyond are quite different indeed,a gothic rebel rousing metal stomp,like Lynard Skynard meets death punk.The title track is an acoustic number,a bit like Wednesday 13's side project Bourbon Crow but with much more psychedelic alien sounds layered over the top.This album is quite good however I'm not sure their first UK release should have been this one,there are several stand out tracks like "Underdogs of Society" which sounds like Gogol Bordello in some respects,"Harlot's House" and "Sabre-Toothed Squirrel"which show the band at it's best,however the rest of the album seems a lot like filler,maybe their back catalogue is worth further investigation before judging them purely on this under par debut UK release.
