After reading the booklet that comes with, the record really grows on you. As what chronophobia below is saying the background noises make the music even more real. Really adds to the atmosphere of the record. If you love arabic music and are willing to put some time in a record by listening it from the start till end and reading the booklet, you're in for a treat!

This is a great mix of songs recorded by Christopher Kirkley between 2009 and 2011, just prior to the political upheaval and subsequent militant occupation of northern Mali that have made the entire region dangerous to travelers. The release is perfectly timed to remind us of the beautiful music to be found in that part of the world--a human voice appended to the anonymous images and headlines circulating in the news, a reminder of the scene and of what's at stake. The recordings on this album have a very on-the-road feel, full of the background sounds of cars and people's voices here, a campfire's crackle there. Happily, these elements aren't distracting. They add to the fabric, making the folky songs feel more authentic. On one track, a man's barely audible humming accompanies truly beautiful acoustic guitar. On another, someone the notes describe as a young girl joins in with percussion played on a plastic container. Still another features something more closely resembling a full band. Different musicians, different settings, sometimes vocals, sometimes none. Music thoroughly grounded in tradition gives way to a cover (at least in melody) of The Police's "Message in a Bottle." In essence, a wonderful, rich assortment of music to bring you closer to kindred spirits on the other side of the world.
