I am a big Pet Shop Boys. I enjoy their style of mixing synthpop with electronic music. I like how their songs could get me out of a bad mood. They are one of the few 80s groups that successfully transitioned to the new modern sound. Yes gave me one of my favourite songs of all time: pandemonium. Elysium had me smiling all through the album. What do I think of their venture into electronica?I'm a little dissapointed....Don't get me wrong, there are songs on here that are wonderful. Unfortunately there are also some songs that feel generic and uses patterns and sounds that I have heard too many times before.1. Axis- wow, i was not expecting the lead single to also be the intro of the album. It's an amazing song it's what got me hyped for the new album.2. Bolshy- i was immediately taken in by the atmosphere of this track. Great vocals by Neil and the beat is great!3. Love is a Bourgeois Construct- This song started great. Great violins and everything, but then that synth horn came in. That part sounds very familiar. Not the final countdown but something around that same time period. One thing I can give the song: it kept me guessing. Its a good song.4. Florescent- Another good song here though not amazing or inventive i'll admit.5. Inside a Dream- Really good beat on this one not to mention I love the chimes! Neil is great in this track as well.6. The Last To Die- At first, I rather enjoyed this cover. Nice synth lines and great vocals. Then, I started to notice how it sounds nearly identical to their cover of Viva La Vida by Coldplay: same speed, same setup, i found myself singing the lyrics of Viva La Vida over the song. It's okay but I just feel like i've heard this before.7. Shouting in the Evening- this is the only song on the album that annoyed me. This song is a mess. There are many elements used so many times that they become annoying. The synth bass is especially annoying. The vocals are a bit irritating especially how Neil's vocals are raised a few more octaves then they should. It doesn't feel like Pet Shop Boys, more like a remix of one of their songs. 8. Thursday- this song surprised me. This is the kind of stuff i love. Doesn't it sound a lot like "why don't we live together" though? Still this is the kind of stuff i love: orchestral synthpop. Not to mention it seems that Pet Shop Boys have finally discovered this new music craze called 'rap'. Its a great song.9. Vocal- the cheesiest song on the entire album. Unfortunately it just sounds too generic for my taste. The beat, lyrics, rhythm; it's just all elements I've heard before. Not to mention the overused rising beat and break.Overall, this is a pretty good album, i will remember the select songs better than the album itself. I feel like this would have been better off being called "Disco Five" because that's what it sounds like. This album just isnt for me I guess. 3/5
