5/5Weapon just came out and I still havent fully appreciated hanDover. How cool is that?This album is incredible tho, now listening to it for over a year and coming back on it.I am finally albe to play it at a volume I feel does it justice.the track Village is so pummelingly brutal, and just when you think its over and your ears are gonna get a break, track 11 comes on. and its 7 minutes long.hanDover is worth every penny alone for NoiseX.One of their best mind-fuck tracks yetits brapping at its best, bringss back memories of Download from Last Rights.Overall, this record hits home in all the right places. Everything it trys to do, it does well, better than well, it excells in it, and with seemingly little effort, as if it came naturally to them.Brap on, yes indeed. Brap the fuck on.

Dont be put off by the 'softer' sound, this thing can really rock and will easily get the cops called on you at a good volume,(like any good SP record should) It will also make you cry and swell with emotion of all sorts. Play at LOUD volumes at night with the windows open, cold wind blowing thru and car lights flashing on the ceiling, eyes closed. HiAF.

Delays, delays, nothing but delays. This has been the reality of Skinny Puppy's new album for over two years now. But soon enough, it will be out for the rest of you to partake of and you won't be disappointed, I assure you. This is quite possibly the closest this band have yet come to releasing a full on IDM-based album. I suppose it makes sense in a way; Autechre are becoming more and more song based again whereas Key and Ogre are back out in the twilight zone. 'HanDover' is a very demanding, abrasive and unorthodox record. This pair have stunningly combined their talents into a cohesive work of beguilingly disturbing proportions. Goddamn is this a dark record! There's a lot of pain and loss chronicled in some of these songs, Ogre almost breaks down in one of them only to snap back into focus at the last second. Yes, it is that sort of precision on display here.I could waste paragraphs chronicling their history and regale you with all manner of incidents throughout their career which would have torn any other band into tiny little pieces, lit them on fire, and then stomped on the ashes. We're very lucky to have them doing this sort of work now. You hear me, industrial boys? NOW. Skinny Puppy have repeatedly been through hell and this is an album done by a pair of tenacious survivors; it really does have the feel of just Cevin and Nivek composing this, probably late at night... with the ringer off the hook. Mighty strange sounds permeate the landscape of this release, many of which I haven't heard before. This has always been the hallmark of what this entity does: it mutates, it contorts, it evolves and it carries on. There's no need to try to make comparisons to others, Skinny Puppy do not do as they do.Key supplies some truly bizarre combinations of synthetics and decimated rhythms. There are hints of a Banana sporting Sloth throughout this thing; I thought Download's last album, 'Helicopter' was aggressive until I heard what 'HanDover' delivers after the first four songs. There's a wildly demented study of characters which Ogre investigates on the song "Brownstone" that is underpinned by a steady beat and wickedly arranged programming. I'm hesitant to call it that because so much of what's on here feels far too organic to be based on machinery, Key's work really comes across as being from a live session with minimal overdubs. Listen closely and you'll discern very morbid atmospheres on the prowl, especially during the song "Wavy". And about those song titles... I don't feel the need to try and discern their meaning as they're clearly meant to be known only to Skinny Puppy. There's some usage of guitar but it has toned down, way way down compared to their last two recent works. The focus is on electronics being maimed and mutilated until they somehow sound recognizeable. After a fashion.I've said numerous times in the past that it isn't Skinny Puppy without The Duck and I'd now like to retract that statement. This most certainly is that damn dog, sounding more mongrel and agonized than ever. Incredibly beautiful studies of the most hideous things, a macabre museum of horrific truths. Nivek, Cevin, you guys are on target with a vengeance and these four years of waiting have been more than worth it. The playing field may have become more crowded with chaff these past couple of decades but it's still very much your park that these imps play in. 'Vyrisus' could take down any of these kiddie acts easily, a flexing cacophonous muscle punctuated by a fist at the end beating the shit out of complacent image obsessed clowns who mime on stage and press buttons emphatically. In 2011, this outfit makes me ask the same question I have asked since 1987: how the fuck do they get those sounds? Do not expect safety to find you when you let out the tones on here, as they are myriad in number and will devour you.They save the most ferocious one for last: a divebombing run directly into a black hole which is entitled 'NoiseX'. Loop upon loop of distorted beats are overlayed with Ogre's voice almost offering up a siren's song to come closer to the malicious frothing shards which whirl and whip about the place in an ever increasingly frenzied supplication for absolute chaos. The new Download and Plateau are going to have some mighty big shoes to fill if they hope to eclipse this material. I'm blown out of my chair each time I listen. This, ladies and gentlemen, is Puppy's new album. I sincerely hope you're up for it.

My favorite record hands down since The Process. It's focused and weird and sounds like the Kevins experimenting again. There are sounds on here that sound new and flickering and glimmering. I mean Ovirt alone harkens back to Remission-Bites era with blips and oddness and this album though heavy on topics grows more amazing each listen. In one of Kevin Ogilvie's most recent interviews he mentions that the original record "In Solvent See" (a play on insolvency) was interrupted due to issues that 'come up' with labels and the direction changed on the album. Said it was much darker and more political than he might have wanted it to be. But one thing I notice here is elegance. Cevin Key has truly been able to put his fingers everywhere here and it's stunning! It's not going to surprise me if there are harsh reviews by the fans of the earliest records. But if you've grown with Skinny Puppy you know that there is no way to ever pin them down by sound or style. Kevin said that every album has a story to tell, isn't that the truth?! He precluded that his writing since he was a child was fragmented on paper like a puzzle and he would dig out phrases. It's amazing to me after all these years that he's able to break into my brain the way he does with such darkness and ability to strip himself raw. A few nods here and there to new and old you must listen to the record to find them. Two great albums pushed out this year this and his solo effort 'Undeveloped'. Grab it and brap on...

oh, quit yer belly-achin'. are you even listening to yourselves? having an opinion about an album is one thing, but you guys can't even muster up a valid argument besides getting all butt-hurt over the fact that SP aren't releasing the exact same shit there were twenty years ago. get over it.

my review is that i LIKE IT. my review is that SP are still doing things in electronic music that are groundbreaking, before their time, and unlike anything that is being released nowadays. GASP, just like back in the 80's-90's.

Not as good as "Mythmaker", still it shows Skinny Puppy is a band trying to move on with every release. The first half of the CD is melodic and melancholic, with very clean sounds, the second half returns on the familiar dark and harsh territories. "Point", "Village" and "Vyrisus" are excellent, especially the latter, very much in the vein of "Too Dark Park". Final "Noisex" is a strange and disturbing instrumental experiment. It grows with more and more listenings. The band is definitely still alive. I personally disagree with the usual moaning about "when we were young"... 3/5

Not quite my opinion. HO sounds more after the classical "trans-melodical" SP typical Sound than the three forerunners (which may is due to the analog midi soundpaterns).According to that, there are a lot of modern idm sounds mixed into it. A composition that matches my understanding of harmonic progression a lot more than mythmaker.cheersalX

from the 2 tracks i heard off this album (and could not finish) this is their worst album yet.i wish this band never got back together they r just dragging their own name through the mud. a parody of a legend. so many bands that broke up that i wished for so long that would get back together and release a new album and its almost never a good result so i stopped hoping. its a damn shame where this band came from and where they r now its absolutely pathetic and only their name allows them to sell this generic garbage.

Skinny Puppy remains my favorite band of all time due to their earlier works, but since Goettel died, it's been the least interesting and inspired of cEvin Key's efforts. his solo albums, collaborations with Spybey, Western, KaSpel, etc., are all challenging and interesting works. SP used to be harsh, experimental, and innovative. now they're not even relevant. it's sad, really, especially knowing that everything else Key is associated with is fantastic.

I tend to agree, but give it a little more time. It has grown on me.
