Wana’ reacquaint yourself with some really steady rock n’ roll ... rock n’ roll that will instantly bring back that vintage “air guitar” you’ve stashed behind the television ... rock n’ roll that will get you tangled up in that imaginary chord that runs from the amp to your vintage “air guitar” ... rock n’ roll with sincere honest lyrics, lyrics that you’ll keep repeating over and over in your head, hoping to remember to use them when the moment is just right ... but you won’t. What you will do is remember Untold Truths by Kevin Costner & Modern West, and wonder how some folks not only know how to play it, but how to say it.I can’t even tell you this album is like anything, or anyone else, cause it’s not ... this is about as real and good and genuine as it gets. What I don’t want to tell you is that this is the same Kevin Costner, famous for his role in JFK, Dances With Wolves, and another half dozen pictures; and I’m afraid that you’ll dismiss him off handily. And if you do that, you’re gonna miss something really special. Though Costner only wrote about half these songs, his rendition throughout is casual, yet to the point, and both are relevant to the lyrical effect of the guitar work. Costner has put together a solid band of cohorts that don’t just posses an alternative country sensibility, but that of true Americana music. Every song is solidly built, brightly atmospheric, and all of the melodies remain comfortable within the range of Costner’s voice, which he doesn’t hold as center of attention, but blends spiritually with the instrumentation. These songs are worthy of John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, or even Bob Seger. There are people who are too hip to pick up on Untold Truths, just “BECAUSE.” And if you want to be one of those people then go ahead, but Untold Truths has not been off my stereo for two days. I can’t get past the relentless drives, the layerings, the washes, nor the unexpected little additions by fiddles that will reach out and grab your heart, setting your fists to pounding, and filling your head with images of something bigger than you are ... yet something you can be part of.Review by Jenell Kesler
