Richard Crow, British performance, installation and sound artist spent eight weeks working, exhibiting and speaking in Dunedin. During his residency the artist worked in a variety of derelict spaces including the basement of the newly opened Blue Oyster Gallery in lower High Street where he installed himself as "Executor", the persona created specifically for his New Zealand sojourn. Crow also presented an installation and collaborative sound and image performance, Sleep, Regeneration and the Spectre of Cinema, in an abandoned cinema (Everbody's/Roxy Cinema, 1915-30).

The artist's residency also provided Artists at Work with the opportunity to bring leading Crow scholar Dr Ed Scheer of the Department of NSW, Sydney, to the city. During his week long visit Dr Scheer presented a seminar on Richard Crow's Dunedin work and generated material for his essay published here - Atmospheres: Richard Crow and the art of the anti-architectural.

The Mr White recording on this CD is a collaboration between Crow and Dunedin artist and musician Michael Morley.

Produced by Artists at Work, the artist residency programme of Otago Polytechnic School of Art.

RICHARD CROW & MICHAEL MORLEYMR WHITEARTISTS AT WORK SITE CD2000 CDRichard Crow, a British performance, installation and sound artist, spent eight weeks lecturing, performing and exhibiting in New Zealand in 1999, during which time this collaboration with Michael Morley of The Dead C came together. Crow's interest is in the detritus of civilization, in what culture casts off and abandons to time. Like the Surrealists, Crow sees this as collectively repressed desire, and his installations are attempts to investigate this cultural subconscious. His sound work deals with similar concerns and the recordings with Morley come saturated in degenerated electronic noise. Whispers of voices and sound, like movie extracts and radio broadcasts, constantly shift below the surface, but their signals sound weak and distant, casting spectral shadows beneath the static.David Keenan, “Mr White - Richard Crow and Michael Morley”, OUTER LIMITS, THE WIRE # 206, April 2001, London (CD review)
