Some haunting lounge jazz microhouse. Of course it wouldn’t be a Horror Inc record without the creepy undertones and cinematic horror themes. A very unique sound and impeccably produced record. Highly recommend. Be sure to ckeck out the unmixed lp version for some extended and more dj friendly tracks.

I think this is the Marc's masterpiece as producer. Where his previous efforts as Akufen in most of the cases failed the test of time, this one will prevail. Perfect mixture of influences from jazz, movie music and orchestral arrangements injected with Marc's typical basslines won't be forgotten like that mikrohouse minimal stuff he used to produce before.. This has real soul written all over it.

Even though Akufen has been absent from the scene for a while now, Marc Leclair revives his Horror Inc. guise to fill the void. And BRIEFLY ETERNAL does that and more. Even though "Phowa" starts off spooky, it soon switches into a jazz-funk, replete with ethnic vocal samples. "Mourning" also starts on a dark, slower note, full of moody strings, though it too segues into funk, while "Remembrance" brings in the rhythm much earlier, even as the strings continue their melancholy pull. But it's the harpsichord on "The Absent" that really kicks things into high gear, bringing in that Akufen bassline we know and love. "I Can't Look at You" is more straightforwardly house, but the twinkling of "Dans La Nuit" takes us even deeper, taking a breath in the middle for a quiet moment and a rhythmic break. The almost atonal melody that takes the fore on "The Sentinel" slips itself easily into the jazzy interlude that takes pops up midway. Similarly, the easy listening introduction of "Crépuscule" becomes increasingly abstract as the track continues, while "Bardo Thodol" maintains a quiet sense of melancholy. "Jhator" is more spare, by comparison, with its guitar strums, but the beat isn't far behind. A lovely, shapeshifting album.

sample in "Mourning" sounding a lot like that in Shackleton - branch is weak?

Briefly: the album designed really well and emotional part brings back the best feelings, expect the unexpected :)

Sounds incredible, great production.

Certainly a high quality stuff here, very well produced, etc. , just what one would expect from this veteran of the scene. But I just can't get rid of the feeling of some unnecessary pretense in these jazzy pieces, as if something big and important is missing. These pieces feel too loung-ey to me, and the melancholy just feels too theatrical. I wish it were more dark, but in intelligent way. Otherwise, fine work, and a good listen.
