The Jealous God label returns with its fifth release since its inception in 2013, and it's a Gallic affair this time around as the label's favorite obsucre musical figure, Lyon-based hardware freak, Laurent Prot, the veteran producer behind In Aeternum Vale, steps up to bat with a trio of productions that demonstrate how under rated he actually is. Some light has been shed on this pioneer's back catalog through the various archival releases issued by Minimal Wave over the past few years, but the music contained on this clear dark blue 12" is indeed a wicked survey of In Aeternam Vale's recent studio output. Let's see how this eighties sound wizard stands up against the modern youngsters.V8 drops a commanding, industrial hip hop rhythm hovering over a searing bassline and blistering mechanical overtones, invigorated with acrid noise, that'll prove its real potential in a damp warehouse. It's one of Prot's trademark extended stompers of a track, that expertly builds up a gripping sense of hissing, through the immensely effective usage of delay as the final third approaches, and the particularly impressive mid section where a sudden avalanche of marching drums adds to the overall brooding atmosphere. 62,54hz is ballistic and uncompromising, making the earth's crust shake with its juddering swagger, incessant and sadistic 4x4 beats, industrial groans and droning migraine passages designed for maximum dance floor penetration. It's hypnotically dark, but without resorting to the common, trite tactics most go for nowadays when attempting to sound dark and menacing. In Aternam Vale does it the simple way, and the outcome is serenely opaque. This is the one to play when you're ready to set the floor afire with some rusty industrial clutter. Way to go!808TS is a gentler affair, by contrast - a slower tempo not sacrificing the menace and fear of its incisive compatriots. Regardless, even with the tempo brought down to a mere crawl, the fractured hip hop rhythm is a perfect back drop for some more teeth grinding drones, awkward sound manipulation and just a simple leakage of varying tonal patterns of all sorts. Unusual, experimental, effective and above all, interesting throughout. Comes in handy after the sheer intensity and visceral impact of its counterparts. To sum it all up, Jealous God 05 is made up of three cavernous tracks of mind impacting techno, from a hardened old-timer who was obviously not born yesterday. This EP is a wonderful exercise - and a mighty successful one - in showing how darker electronics are supposed to sound when done properly. Being influenced by post-punk and industrial seems to be the big thing these days, as suddenly everyone and their brother seem to take an interest in it, but leave it to a battle scarred expert to bring home the goods. Along with the string of 12" released on Minimal Wave, which have, long overdue, brought to life some of the producer's forward thinking masterpieces from the end of the eighties, "Jealous God 05" is living proof how this frenchman can easily make most present producers take a run for their money. I'd be cheeky enough to say that this is the finest release on the Jealous God imprint thus far, by some distance too...
