I was right there with ESTHER PHILLIPS in NYC when she recorded this wonderful album in March of 1984! No one ever imagined she would be dead five months later and she never recored it as a farewell to her fans as some have said! She was alive and well and no one ever dreamed this wouldbe her last official recording!When she recorded A WAY TO SAY GOODBYE, she complimented its songwriter--DAVE MATTHEWS by sayingwhat a beautiful song it was! This was not the title track it was to be FINE BROWN FRAME whichhas never been released, yet! When she arrived at the session, she was supposed to have had a list of the songs she was to record! She asked me to call SHIRLEY (SHIRLEY ALSTON REEVES the original lead singer of theSHIRELLES and my best friend) but I did not want to because she was sick and in bed and it wastoo late to call! ESTHER convinced me by saying she needed to call her because she was theonly one who could save her with her list of songs!We called! Their collaboration became SHIRLEY's remedy! They talked and sang the songs and itwas not long before ESTHER had her song list! As we walked from the session, ESTHER asked meif SHIRLEY would be insulted if she asked her to be on the album with her--saying she really wanted her on the album but did not want to insult her since she had so many hits herself!I told her I was sure she would be very pleased with the idea!If ESTHER PHILLIPS had lived to see the release of this fine album, SHIRLEY would have been on italso! The album was never released until several years after her death!LOVE this as much as I do!
