The four tracks from Sun Down and/or Last Stand’s EP titled ‘Follow the Sounds of Families Running’ seem to be widely open to interpretation. Listeners are forced to stop focusing on the meaning of words, as each track is free from the lyrics and vocals that dominate most songs. In fact the only clue as to the meaning of a track is offered through the titles of each. This comes as a welcome break, as audiences can simply absorb the sounds of pure undiluted music. The poignant and emotive music that resounds from Sun Down and/or Last Stand’s EP seems perfectly suited to appear on the soundtrack of a deeply moving or melancholy film. The rises and falls of the strangely unnerving and intense music on tracks like ‘We Angels Drop Like Bombs from Planes’ creates a dramatic background to the rises and falls of life. In fact the music here, and in other tracks like ‘Cloud Heads Big Farewell (forever saying goodbye in circles)’ and ‘The Shotgun and the Crooked Smile’, seem to be a reflection of our modern world, full of conflict, warfare, suffering and despair. The music is heartbreaking and agonising, scattered with moments of more sinister sounds. Yet at the same time it offers up moments that are relaxing, peaceful and tranquil, like the calm before the storm, or the moments of silence that nature gives us before it erupts into a dramatic climax of natural disasters and man made desolation. Unlike most, the tracks on Sun Down and/or Last Stand’s EP are not limited by traditional form and structure, and the length of tracks such as ‘Synchronised Dreaming’, which runs for about 10 minutes, leave the room and scope to take the audience on an emotional journey, exploring the sounds of music in greater depth and flying out of the limits of the mind. With so many sounds working together simultaneously and in harmony, the music of Sun Down and/or Last Stand could be described as organic. It is made up of many separate and distinct sounds that magically come together to form a whole piece of music that is very often quite profound.

Melodic industrial, almost sounds like an oxymoron doesn’t it. However the tacks from 'Sundown and / or Last Stands' E.P ‘Follow The Sounds of Families Running’ pulls it off with a musical competency which belies there years. The sounds soar out of your speakers leaving the listener with a heady feeling of elevation as each song culminates in euphoric crescendos. A very solid effort from a band to watch out for in the future, I look forward to hearing more
