One last thought. It would have been cool to add "My Private Tokyo" and it's B-side to this instead of 6 mixes of "Ccccan't You See".
  • I am hcv men
my private tokyo is vicious pink phenomena which was the version of the band with Dave Ball

Thanks for all your help in clarifying the quality of this re-issue. I can now make the purchase without fear of being ripped off by Cherry Red again.

Does anyone know if this is yet another Cherry Red hatchet job? You know, where they transfer vinyl to CD, with no regard to original tapes or remastering? Especially in the case of 12" mixes in which pops and clicks can be heard. Been burned too many times by their incredibly inferior re-issues.

Unusually for Cherry Red it does state Digital Remaster in small text on rear publishing notes, though not in main liner notes. I have listened through headphones and wasn't able to spot any vinyl signs. There is a quiet crackle/pop near beginning of "The Spaceship..." but that also appears on the Canadian cassette so is probably on the master. Visage's "The Anvil" was a case in point, with some b-sides from crackly vinyl without any attempt to clean them up!

I agree with anfunny2003.Its nice to have these in a full rich sound rather then those tinny MP3s floating around for years.

It's not a 'hatchet job' at all. Generally, Cherry Red/Pop have been a lot better of late, even crediting where vinyl sources are used... it always disappoints me to find a vinyl source, especially a lazy one, so I understand how you feel. The sound here, however is really good. or, good enough for me. It's all from the original master tapes (apparently), by Brian Moss himself. He also provides detailed liner notes and there's plenty of photos, black and white, and colour, and an illustrated discography. I was a bit frustrated he talked about the earlier singles and b-sides, but didn't explain why they aren't present (probably copyright issues). I'd say this is a decent Cherry Pop release. Not as pristine, perfect and 'Apple-like' as the PWL reissues of late, but at the top end of their usual output. I'm just so pleased to be able to play this stuff in digital quality finally!
