Alan Silvestri has delivered some amazing scores over the years, but a few of them have gone under the radar for some reason. His work on the Summer '96 Arnie action extravaganza Eraser is one of them (Blown Away being another). When I first saw it at the tender age of 15 I was a bit confused by the opening credits. The generic, boring music just didn't sound like Silvestri and was completely out of sync with the rest of the film.Apparently some suits at Warner disliked Silvestri's opening cue and hired a nobody to re-score the scene. They disliked the original music? Are they mad? Yes, it's underscored, but who can deny the seductive mystery of the bassoon? It gives the opening a whole different edge from the drone that was eventually used. This expanded score CD gives us the chance to hear that unused opening at long last.As for the rest of the score, Silvestri keeps the balance between high-powered action and suspense just right. I admit that the electric guitars are out of place, but when the rest is so good it's easy to ignore. Eraser may not be rich in themes like Predator or Back to the Future, but it's full of excitement gets enough mileage out of the few repeating melodies. Track 10 (Kruger Escapes) is definitely the highlight of the score.La-La Land Records' 2010 limited edition release greatly improves on the original 1996 album by offering more than 30 minutes of extra music, in chronological order, with in-depth liner notes. It's definitely one to hunt down before it becomes too expensive.
