Swayzak has been known not only for their own productions, but for their remixes, and ROUTE DE LA SLACK, they gather some of their finest for our delectation, augmented by a second disc of rare tracks. Quark’s “Acoustiques Paralleles” starts stark and deep but ends on a more delicate note, while Senor Coconut’s electro-Latin cover of “Smoke on the Water” becomes a frenzy of horn blasts and rolling bass. Their traditional dubby tech-house emerges on Michael Magne’s “Fantomas” and their twitchy experimental side breaks out, abstracting Ursula Rucker’s vocals to mere suggestions on “Tic Toc.” And on and Mighty Math’s “Experimental Child,” the two sides merge. For a change of pace, “Sonata for Petra” by George Sarah slows to an orchestral, melancholy thud and pure dub takes over Systemwide’s “People of the Book,” but they’re as equally as moody taking on Slam’s “Human.” On their rarities disc, they kick off with the slow grind of “Ease My Mind” (which recurs later on “If I Didn’t Care” and “Saints”) but quickly glide into their smooth tech-house with “Slave to the Hard Drive” and “Blufarm.” “Lokal” brings in the breaks, and “Grace’s State” shows off their skills at remixing their own poppier work (“Mike Up Your Mind” is a deeper take of a track from the same album). For minimal fans, “Wavemail” hits the spot, and they get to exercise their funk muscles on the weird and humorous “I Love a Lassie.” Even more impressive, though, is their collaboration with Theorem. Individually both groups are accomplished, but together, like on the smooth “Devil of Rotations,” the can blow minds. (Luckily the entirety of their collaborations is available on Theorem’s album EXPERIMENTS IN SYNCHRONICITY.) A varied compilation, and all the stronger for it.
