Mr. Scruff opens up a can of NINJA TUNA... two cans, actually! He sets up the hip-hop immediately with "Test The Sound," but the jazz takes over (with Alice Russell in tow) on "Music Takes Me Up." But a touch of Latin funk starts to come through on Quantic-assisted "Donkey Ride," and a jazz-house picks up the pace for "Hairy Bumpercress." The percussion hits the breaks on "Whiplash" with a wobble bass, slowing down the middle for some squat funk, once again highlighting the famous Scruff sense of humor (the wobble bass once again takes point later on "Bang The Floor"). And even though I'm not a fan of "Nice Up The Function," a collaboration with Roots Manuva, his work with Andreya Triana on "Hold On" hits the spot. He brings up the disco funk with "Get On Down" and hints at some Afro-beat with "Kalimba," before the gentler "Stockport Carnival" brings things to a gentle Brazilian tempo. On the BONUS BAIT disc, "Bunch Of Keys" gets things going with a groovy vibe, and "Rocking Chair" keeps it up with smoothness to spare. "Listen Up" leans more on spare percussion and jazz horns to boost the playful lyrics from Broke 'n' English, but "Fix That Speaker!" gets back to the instrumentals. Andreya Triana returns for "Hold the Dub," a deeper and more bass-heavy exploration of the earlier track, and that bass-ic instinct leans into "Cat & Mouse (Version 2)" and "The Clock" as well. "Zen," with Skuff and Inja, is a nice call-out to the entire Ninja Tune crew, while the original "Cat & Mouse" stays playful and spare. This tuna still smells fresh.
