Reviews:

The Volume Magazine issue that started it all. A truly thoughtful and representative example of the indie / alternative / electronic music scene in the UK and US in 1990-91. Every track on it was previously unreleased at the time the issue was released, and there's not a weak track on the compilation. Some are amazing, some are simply good enough for repeated listens. My favorites were always Meat Beat Manifesto's "Love Mad", Kitchens of Distinction's "Innocence", Throwing Muses' "Red Shoes", The Darkside's "Guitar Voodoo" (which I think was a live version?), The Orb's "Reefer Spin In The Galaxy" (an exclusive remix of "Supernova At The End Of The Universe"), New Order's amazing Dimitri of Paris remix of "Confusion", originally issued on a DMC vinyl compilation for DJs in 1990, The Shamen "Hyperreal" remix, truly great, Thrill Kill Kult's "Leather Sex" remix, The Wolfgang Press's alternate version of "Sucker", Daisy Chainsaw's "Upmanship Down". The beginning of something wonderful, this magazine / compilation CD opened the eyes of so very many youths and adults alike to the burgeoning new music happening, and almost assuredly created a lasting passion for indie music in many of those people, if not all of them. Bless Rob Deacon (R.I.P. 2007) for making this happen.
