Ben Harper made his debut in 1994 with the striking album Welcome To The Cruel World. His guitar sound was then mainly by its use of the dobro and acoustic Weissendorf guitar. Nowadays he takes ever more frequently also the electric guitar, which his fourth cd Burn To Shine extremely fascinating and varied. Harper has his roots still firmly in the old country blues and folk, but adds in songs like Less, Please Bleed and Burn To Shine on the Lenny Kravitz-way solid rock elements. Burn To Shine it should especially have the understated atmosphere in, for example, the opener Alone, The Woman In You "and the piano ballad Beloved One. Other outstanding are Suzie Blue (jazz old style), Steal My Kisses (with dance beat and human beatbox) and the spiritual In The Lord's Arms.
