Ashley Burchett's first fresh material after the release of his debut album last year, the invigorating "Frames Of Reference".This time around Phase combines speaker-rattling techno sounds with a series of bizarre beatless excursions. Out-last shudders like a creaking door or a cannon ball falling down a flight of stairs, while Leap Into The Deep is as subterranean and subaquatic as its title would aptly imply. Burden of Proof and Systems Theory, each on its respective sidee, provide the familiar Token dance floor fare, with a real attention to detail and powerful thrusts, throwing down nightmarish synth patterns over genuine, first class beats. Midway through, Systems Theory introduces a buzzing, nervous sound passage that'll make you feel like your head has just been tossed in a swarm of pissed off bees.Emergence (In A Psychological System) blends those two modes - deep and pulsating - perfectly. With its booming bass line and off-beat percussion, it's as deadly on the floor as it's neatly arranged and meticulously produced for classy bed room listening experiences, with subdued, yet shrilling synth stabs slowly patiently paving way towards the surface. The breaks are very wisely and skillfully done, changing the percussion, and then reintroducing a heavier drum pattern some three minute into the track.Compared to some of his recent material, as a whole, "Emergence EP" is a little more leftfield. Phase does sacrify some dance floor credibility, and DJ friendliness is traded in for some mind boggling ambient passages, which despite applying highly intricate and accurate sound trickery, unfortunataly just don't go anywhere. From a technical view point, the production vaults are bar none, as one comes to expect from mr. Burchett. However, technical issues aside, the interludes are just too short to really fully captivate your attention, and are definitely too short to actually serve any meaningfull purpose. I mean, sure one could have been left as an intro, and one to end things in a psychotic matter, but having whacked out sixty second interludes between some proper techno fodder just kills the listening session for me. I mean, once Burden Of Proof is up, and once the maniacal sounds of Out-Last kick in, I fall off my chair every single time. That interlude, for example, has the potential to develop into a nasty acid tinged monster of a track, but it just abruptly ends leaving one with a "now what was that?" look on their face. Construct Of The Mind is even worst. It seriously bugs me, and almost makes my heart stop every single time.Anyways, as with virtually any of Ashley's material, you will get your money's worth. For me this EP was worth it for the intensity of Burden Of Proof and the sinister drive of Emergence (In A Psychology System). I am sure the ambient bits will win some listeners over, but they just didn't do it for me. This EP, while not reachning the insanely high quality standards of beloved classics like "Binary Opposition" and "Fragmenta", is still diverse, punching, lively, and in one way or another, always delivering. I would say a solid four out of a five.
