Reviews:
  • Zeli
Release from 1985, with paste labels sometimes with a tracks sticker on Side B. Is this the best reissue??
  • Sharpbrew
My purchase is on a computer CD-R with a nice picture disc. Massacre, now they make CDs on recorded CD-Rs. Shame.
  • Shezokha
Unfortunately at least my brand new sealed copy from Prog Temple is unplayable in some cd players. Nothing wrong with the music and the band.
  • Dilkree
So... What's a 'flipback' cover?Just a regular 12" sleeve which you flip (back) over and it's got the credits/blurb on?Cos it's certainly not a gatefold vinyl sleeve...? :-)
  • Elildelm
It is for sure not a gatefold vinyl sleeve. It is a cover made from two parts: the front part, with a narrow fold-over on the reverse glued to the separate back part.
  • Moonworm
where did that "stone washed" come from? - never heard of that one...
  • Cktiell
deleted, 'cause it is not a cover variation i.m.o., just an overexposed photography.
  • Mr.mclav
I also have this copy and I must say that it is also very bad pressing. Blurry and fogy sound. Shame, such great music.
  • Yojin
This is fun for its superbe cover variation. Pressing/sound is good.
  • Moralsa
ZEL (Spain) and CBS (IT) are affordable in mint (-) and worth every cent. German pressings are good as well....just in case you you are looking for a really listenable powerful original and not having the chance to get an at least mint (-) one on EVOLUTION.Same counts for the "other monster" RAW MATERIAL (on ZEL, CBS and VOGUE).

In the early revolutionary days of the Canterbury scene in the late 60's was a band known as Uriel fronted by a talented guitarist: Steve Hillage. Much touted but misunderstood, Uriel became the notorious Egg when Steve left the band to resume his university studies. So, now with an album behind them and a record contract for at least one more, Egg rejoined by Steve Hillage got together for more sessions, however Deram weren't interested at all and, as legend goes, Steve Hillage hawked it around record companies until he found a buyer in the American label Roulette. Of course, at that time, few people noticed the album, as the rear cover notes were totally fictional, Steve Hillage hiding behind the name Simon Sasparella, Dave Stewart masquerading as Sam Le-Uff, Mont Campbell curiously sought to pretend he was a Nigerian as Njerogi Gategaka, and Clive Brooks appeared as one Basil Dowling. Sure, such obscure names and limited release meant it was unlikely anyone would notice it at the time, committing what was later to become a classic to obscurity (despite a UK release on Evolution - along with Raw Material's debut - and subsequent 70's releases by Bellaphon in Germany and Barclay in France). So, forgetting the superlatives, what was Arzachel like? Actually it's a very varied album with very notable Steve Hillage presence, he was yet to master his echo-space guitar style, here donning the psychedelic mantle of fuzz and distortion. The first side features four very contrasting tracks: Garden of Earthly Delights - a fully blown slice of heavy psychedelia with a weird twist; Azathoth - a more typically Egg-like piece with Mont Campbell on vocals; Queen St. Gang - an instrumental featuring organ sounding like laid-back The Nice; and the blitzer Leg - a powerful blues number, with screeching keyboards, Hillage wailing in an almost drunken manner and trying to out-do Hendrix on the guitar. But, you ain't heard nothing yet! The second side has but two tracks in 27 minutes: Clean Innocent Fun again features Steve's vocals, and a song reminiscent of early Led Zeppelin, a touch bluesy and fragmented, however the centre section moves into overdrive, thunderous riffing like a cross between Egg and Group 1850. And if that weren't enough, we're really plunged into the deep end with Metempsychosis, a furious instrumental trek into deep space, travelling from Egg territory, via Pink Floyd and Ash Ra Tempel, and beyond onto the sizzling, bubbling atmospheric space-outs of early Tangerine Dream - a phenomenal work that would have been enough to give the album legendary status alone!Because of the circumstances behind its original release it's highly improbable that an official reissue will ever appear, numerous pirate represses have surfaced, as well as a CD taken from slightly incomplete but excellent quality tapes. Meanwhile the legend grows, that Egg were not only amongst the finest exponents of classical rock, they were also exceptional masters of psychedelic rock too! From my review in Audion #22, published in July 1992

The Arzachel album is rightly lauded as a lost gem of British rock and it is an important and essential album not least because it bridges the gap between the psychedelic lunacy of Pink Floyd and the beginning of the Progressive music of the Canterbury scene. It is a highly entertaining and highly recommended piece of work all made in one day.. Confusingly enough, the Arzachel record was not recorded by a band called Arzachel at all. The grooves on this record were put down by Uriel, a group which contained guitar virtuoso Steve Hillage along with the three members of the progressive group The Egg
  • Kearanny
didn' know that the album is so rare and highly priced!!! I inherited a record collection from my dad and this album was also in it :)
  • Rainshaper
Nice reissue in thick high gloss sleeve. An essential purchase for all psych fans. Mind blowing!
  • Kaghma
Hi, is this reissue really so much better than the Klimt version? is it possible to know more about how they compair please? I'm searching for a good vinyl issue of this album. Thanks very much!
  • Landarn
I had a copy of this issue on Klimt...briefly, it's a terrible pressing. Be warned.
