GORDIAN KNOTGORDIAN KNOT(Sensory SR 3005) CD 59mThis is one of those albums that, when I first listened to it, parts struck me as brilliant, but I wasn't quite sure. There are extraordinary passages of Robert Fripp cum David Torn guitar, superb polyrhythmic drives, with complex interlaced keyboards, bass, etc. It's kind of like a hybrid of ECM 80's rock-jazz styles, lots of Steve Tibbetts stylisms, and modern instrumental King Crimson. With Trey Gunn in the line-up, the King Crimson edge is not so surprising. So, what is it that's awry here? Nothing really, it's just that the mixture is a little odd at times, and what they really need is a jazz drummer, not a pop drummer. As such, Gordian Knot are pretty good, and the album is certainly a grower. It will surely please almost anyone with a thirst for intensive instrumental rock noodling.Alan Freeman[AUDION #42.
