Having trouble getting into Gentle Giant? Try Free Hand. No, I'm not suggesting it is their best, but the first side of this album contains what must be three of their best songs - and I do mean SONGS. Here they go for a prog-pop approach, and yes that can and does work. Lots of very memorable vocal melodies all over the place, good riffage - then they often dip into some soloing. GG had the good sense not to go overboard too much on the first side, but there lies my only beef with this album: from His Last Voyage onwards they get a lot more esoteric and "generic Gentle Giant prog" in style. I don't mind it, but I much prefer them singing over big riffs in odd (or hell, why not even, for a change?) time sigs.
