While it’s odd that “IDM” encompasses everything from drill ‘n’ bass to glitch to this little gem of an album, Global Goon’s third for Rephlex, the term “braindance” describes VATICAN NITEZ pretty well. The rhythms on this album are near danceable (though I don’t necessarily suggest throwing one into your DJ set), but the main draw are the catchy melodies that drift through. “Jerky Dharma,” for example, has its quiet tones reprised by the louder tones and harmonized by the singing. But it’s not until the later half of the album that the magic really starts to shine through: “Drugula” (my favorite) has a simple structure, but its melody catches the listener off-guard and pulls him willingly into the music. “Scott Cronce is the CEO” has a wobbly funk that’s infectious as well. It might be off-kilter, but at times, it really hits the spot.

This is a strong contender for my all time top 10. Using basic techniques and simple layers, GG have produced an album full of quarky beats that would do fine while painting your toes or hosting that margarieta party.

I remember being disappointed when I bought this, I shall have to revisit it and see what my cloth ears missed! I do love Cradle of History though, that is total genius all the way through and probably a top 10 for me.
