Review by Craig Jenkins, The Silent Ballet, 5th March 2010.Approaching Beauty Becomes the Enemy of the Future while wearing a proverbial blindfold has actually proven to be a great way to dig in and unpack what's going on. [antonymes] traffics in a variety of light-headed ambient electronica that rewards quietude. The record is comprised of seven relatively short, barely there sound sketches of enormous, if fragile, beauty. The echoing, stately swatches of piano, synthetic strings, and lightly programmed percussion [antonymes] has assembled demand attention to detail. It's an album of ephemera that is brittle enough to disintegrate at any moment, as "Grotesquely Beautiful" actually appears to do when the pianos cease and the barely audible synth drone underpinning crumbles into actual silence during the track's final minute.

After a few minutes with Beauty Becomes the Enemy of the Future, the patient listener begins to hear the silence. The spacious "Pour Toujours Sans Espoir," a glacial march from chord to gently and slowly played chord, fades out completely at the end of each measure. This is a record that makes the absence of sound into an instrument as much as any bit of piano, synth, or programmed drum to be heard on it. The audience may not even notice it's over when its sprightly twenty-four minute runtime ends. That's all right. Kick back and enjoy the silence

Review from Norman Records:'Beauty Becomes the Enemy of the Future' by Antonymes is the debut release from new label Cathedral Transmissions. A mini album of sparsely arranged piano odes, subtly accompanied by hints of electronic and occasional strings, this seven track mini album will most likely be enjoyed in the comfort and isolation of a bedroom... Late at night. Saying that, this is lonely but not unhappy music, in fact it's an amazingly uplifting listen with surprise euphoria hidden around every corner. Compositions begin small and mouse like before swelling up and overwhelming the listener with magically light synth tones and reverberant vocal choir-esque outbursts. One that needs to be experienced first hand, judge for yourself.
