Can anyone explain why the LP was "partially unofficial"? Was it one of those Flying Nun releases where it was basically self-funded and self-released?
  • Dishadel
As I recall someone found 300 coverless copies of the original vinyl and decided to "reissue" them in a generic sleeve with a paste-on B&W image of the original front cover.

It was Xpressway that took the leftover LP stock (in the early 90s maybe) and put them in photocopied covers, with Xpressway stickers over the vinyl labels, as per the photos. I'd imagine Flying Nun just gave them the records as by the 90s they had no pretty much interest in any of the smaller artists they'd released in the 80s - Hence a lot of them turning up with releases on Xpressway.

The copy I had was a limited edition where (I presume both?) of the artists had hand painted the sleeve in a kind of sub Jackson Pollock splatter effect and made it themselves so it may be referring to that. The photographs on discogs on this entry are a photocopy of that original artwork.

This version happened when F Nun found a bunch of records without covers somewhere quite a few years after the initial release and proceeded to make up the covers so they could get these out there to interested people. That is the simple explanation for the different covers
