On the face of it, this should have been a really great JR album. Continuing in the tradition of "Homegrown" and "Slim Slo Slider", Johnny chose excellent songs from Jimmy Cliff, Sonny Curtis and Herb Pederson to cover; the standout is Michael Murphey's "Geronimo's Cadillac", delivered with more plaintiveness than Murphey's own version. Cut in Nashville at The Sound Shop with a host of excellent session musicians, the playing is spot-on. There's even Linda Ronstadt providing backing vocals on half the songs. So why wasn't it a killer? For some reason, all that fine musicianship, local flavor and spotless production just didn't jell. One listen and you've picked out the great song -- the rest comes off somehow second-rate. I can't explain it; it just is. The record sold so poorly, in fact, that its followup, "New Lovers And Old Friends", originally slated for release on Atlantic, got dropped by the label until Johnny convinced the gang at CBS to lease the masters. It's a great example of how the whole, sometimes, is not equal to the sum of the parts.© 2015 C.A.N. All rights reserved.
