Big beat, pass it through your mind and the most lurid of dance music's mistakes will be recalled. Sirens, rock guitars, animal noises; these are the things that dance music should have never so readily added to its sonic pallette. The scathing words levelled at such 'eclecticism' by some reactionary music journalists have made the sample a delicate issue. Thus the post big-beat climate is one where dance music producers are much more careful with what goes through their akai circuitry, lest they find themselves subject to a journalistic mauling. Which is why the second offering from Bronx Dogs should be given such praise. The duo of Richard Sen and Paul Eve have created an album full of borrowed grooves that manages to eschew the big-beat production ideal. Instead the pair manage to draw upon their b-boy heritage to make an album set apart by virue of its studious beat construction. This is in equal parts an album that pays respect to the soundtracks of John Carpenter as it does to Prelude style disco. From the throbbing bass squelch and glorious proccessed string sweeps of 'Enviro' through to the loopy block party style bongo-thon 'Candida Royale' this is eclecticism as it should be, tightly regulated by the minds of the enthusiatic and knowledgable. Tempos vary accross the album but one never gets the feeling that this is an album to be wilfully divergent. Hip-hop tempos are assumed but never do we get a corny 'dance producers do rap' style effort, instead we get a handful of brooding electronic downtempo cuts. This album also has it's foot firmly on the dancefloor with a number of chunky floor workers, coming on like cross-pollinations of the street sounds back catalogue and Pal Joey.
