Notes

Afro-Cuban jazz, which is now called Latin jazz, had its first success in 1943 when Mario Bauza composed the percussive piece "Tango". A few years later, Norman Granz, an impresario with foresight, began experimenting when he recorded the sounds of Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Flip Phillips fronting the Machito orchestar. (Machito, nee Frank Gillo, another Cuban emigre', was Bauza's brother-in-law.)
