Video about Sade - Diamond Life

Can anyone help me? I have the Portrait Canadian Pressing of Sade's Diamond Life LP on vinyl. Recently, I had purchased the "remastered" CD of the same album (Epic 500595 2). Strangely, the version/mix of "Smooth Operator" sounded very different. Initially, I thought it was my memory going, but I dug out and old cassette tape recorded from the original vinyl and played it. It was remarkably different! The Canadian Portrait pressing had more saxophones (and maybe even more percussions) making the sound "jazzier". While the "remastered" CD version was a little "raw" to me. Even Sade's vocals were a little "distorted".Does anyone have more info about which pressing I am to get the "original" Portrait LP Version of "Smooth Operator"?

Yeah , I was surprised as well when I heard the same thing , I had heard the "single / video " version ( yes this version on the portrait USA CD editions ) all these years & never bought the remastered re issues , thinking nothing new just the same old remastered job . But last year when I bought an ORIGINAL NO BARCODE ( disc pressed in Japan ) for $3.00 @ a record convention & popped it in the car & to hear the first track Smooth Operator I was taken aback ! I immediately thought , this too was a more " raw " ( more like a live one take in the studio sort of BBC sessions version ) . I'm sure this " raw " version was the earlier version put on the LP initially , then when Smooth Operator was to be released as the next single , a bit more production was put into it , ie. the additional percussion , horns etc. then Portrait picked it up for USA ( & other territories ) release & this is the version that replaced the " raw " version on the LP . I was just excited to hear the original / raw version upon never hearing it before .........something undiscovered for me . I think it's cool that CBS / Sony went back & put the original raw version back on the LP / CD when remastering for re-release . Now if only they could go back & release her singles from the first 2 LP's in cd single format ......my 2 cents , hope it helps .

the first pressings (1984 epic) i believe contain the original album version of smooth operator. the 1985 portrait pressings contain what i believe to be the video version of smooth operator. it is after all, the version in the video. the latter is the one that most people know and love. both releases have different mastering.btw, part of the 'distortion' you were hearing was probably the hard compression record companies use to remaster their cd's. don't be fooled, 90% of remaster jobs are nothing but volume maximization. why lose dynamic range and develop tinnitus? one exception of this is genesis' 'turn it on again THE TOUR EDITION' where songs were actually re-mixed down. don't confuse this with 'remix'. so yeah, go with the original 1984 and 1985 pressings. :)

Hello, I bought the French vinyl edition of Diamond Life back in 1984 and was disappointed to hear Smooth Operator sounding "raw" compared to its 7 inch and 12 inch counterparts. I think the "raw" version is the standard album mix for European editions. I don't know if the jazzier version of Smooth Operator was ever featured on any CD edition of this album. Hope it helps.
