Notes

"Recorded in [March] 1989 but never issued until now [mixed March 2003], this exquisite set was intended as Stan Get's debut for A&M Records. 'Bossas and Ballads: The Lost Sessions' uncovers virtuoso performances from a jazz master who was enjoying a respite from decling health and in the throes of personal transformation."

Calling Kenny Barron, “The other half of my musical heart,” we find the legendary duo again forging new frontiers, frontiers that may at first seem common place mid tempo jazz ... though with the right ears, it’s impossible not to be staggered here on Bossas & Ballads: The Lost Sessions, where Getz hands down another superb album filled with gorgeous soulful emotionally fueled and filled enlightened rhythmic numbers that can do nothing less than celebrate the mastery of his compositions and instrumentation.Recorded in 1989, yet for disingenuous business arrangements, this seemingly effortless recording did not find it’s way into our hands until 2003 where it’s be hailed as a faultless musical holy grail. On this dynamic release Stan Getz and his tenor saxophone allows us to understand why he’s been considered one of the most important jazz artists of the last century. If you were on the west coast during the 50’s you couldn’t miss him, as he and his super cool works made him one of the defining voices ever to grace the stage, and in the 60’s he ushered in that lazy crazy bossa nova with hits that included “Desafinado” and “The Girl from Ipaneam. While he experimented with some fusion during the 80‘s, he was never able to sake his luscious laid back renditions, renditions that flow fully formed here on Bossas & Ballads: The Lost Sessions, culminating a career, while drawing on sounds and inferences that span a lifetime of work. This is a not to be missed body of work, suitable for a satisfying evening of delight and casial contemplation ... never interrupting, yet ever present.Review by Jenell Kesler
