I picked up this bootleg at a local record shop for $30 and surprisingly there isn't a whole lot information about it online, so I had to do an in-depth investigation of the material on this album using the online grateful dead concert archive. The first date (July 3rd 1966, Fillmore West) is definitely correct, but the material supposedly taking place at some point in January 1966 is incorrect. It is instead the March 25th 1966 Trouper's Hall Concert as well a handful of unknown venues (as far as I know) and a few Jorma Kaukonen songs (supporting act?). The information I've been able to gather on these tapes suggests that they were recorded at the infamous "Acid Test" events that took place frequently in '66 Frisco, but after doing a cross check with the dead's live releases on concerts from 1966, these two gigs still appear to be unreleased. And as far as unreleased bootlegs from the mid-sixties go, the sound quality is outstanding. Though they were performed before live audiences in crowded halls, little to no interference can be heard in the dead's playing and the good acoustics at both venues give the live performances a studio-like feel to them (when I first listened to it I thought they were studio outtakes). To top it all off, the performances are incredible, just legendary. Tight rhythms in the guitar playing, beautiful lyrical harmonies between Garcia and Weir, and some excellent organ playing from Pigpen. Even the three Jorma songs sound fantastic, lots of good folky atmosphere in them. For anybody who's curious about picking up this album, I'm going to leave a more detailed track list for you to reference and see if its worth your money. For anybody who's a fan of the early dead though, I'm sure this won't disappoint. Quite a treasure-trove of rare, good-quality material on this double LP and I'm enjoying every minute I listen to it :)*Denotes Fillmore West, San Francisco, July 3rd 1966 (sound quality = A) ^Denotes Troupers Hall, Los Angeles, March 25th 1966 (sound quality = A) #Denotes Unknown Venues (sound quality = A/A-)+Denotes Jorma Kaukonen Songs (sound quality = A/A-)Side A: 18:401. *Viola Lee Blues: 6:362. *Big Boss Man: 3:113. *Sittin' On Top Of The World (cuts out): 2:194. *Dancing In The Street: 6:33Side B: 19:221. *I Know You Rider (cuts out): 1:392. *He Was A Friend Of Mine (cuts in): 3:353. ^Stealin' (cuts in): 1:404. ^Pigpen Organ Jam: 7:465. ^Hey Little One: 4:42Side C: 19:451. ^I'm A Hog For You Baby: 2:492. ^You Don't Have To Ask: 5:593. ^Cold Rain And Snow (incl.
