Asteroid No. 4 tripped me back to the mid 60’s and the psychedelically mind bending release by The Chocolate Watch Band, where they not only delivered some spectacular music, but packaged the record with mystic liner notes, written as a journal, of recording in a smokey drugged haze of thick Afghani Finger Hash and assorted pills late into the night ... late into the recording session ... all while waiting on a mystical magical box ... a box that would not only release the music, set it all in order, but free the lads from their mortal coil, and allow them to roam the galaxies free and unbounded. This idea of delivering a special package, one that evokes and blurs a hazy relationship between fact and fiction is difficult to do, the Stones did it with the 3D cover of Their Satanic Majesty’s Request, and the Beatles certainly did it with Sgt. Pepper, leaving me wasted and wishing for more. I’m more then sure that Asteroid has never heard of The Chocolate Watch Band, but they do tie the album together with a great double gated package, trippy cover art and fantastic liner notes that make it all the more worthwhile. Legend: 2008 A.D. ... Across the marsh, it was hard to believe that civilization had ever existed at all, much less come and gone and was about to come again. And where the lake met the woods, a group of genteel woodsmen had dropped out completely, I mean, really dropped out and constructed for themselves a bucolic yet no less man made realm. Great white moonfruits grew outside of their laboratory ... You’ll have to get the album to finish the rest, me [?], I was hooked. But I wasn’t merely hooked by the liner notes, I was hooked by the music that completely wrapped itself around me, bathing me in light sensations of the pre-peak rise of an acid drenched trip and suspended me ever so gently as lush layers of atmospheric sound washed over me time and time again, becoming more complex and intoxicating with each song. It’s been years since I’ve been so completely captivated by an album in all respects. Lucky for me, I was able to see Asteroid No. 4 with about a hundred and fifty other people at Kung Fu Necktie, where they opened for Spectrum, defied gravity, and spun the twelve by twelve foot stage into the cosmos and back again, leaving me drained, limp and hungry for more.Review by Jenell Kesler
