A quality LP which defines the era when techno, hardcore and jungle all went off in very different directions. On very few occasions hence have Richie Hawtin and the late Caspar Pound rubbed shoulders on tracklist with Foul Play and Lenny Dee.The overall atmosphere on the LP is one of vague menace, right from the swirling vocals and rattling breaks of the classic 'Drowning in Her' you know this isnt hands in the air material. Which makes the fact that this album was released in CD form with nice bright artwork typical of mainstream dance compilations all the more odd.Anyway, the point is that dark-sounding tunes are the order of the day here - from the sweeps of 'Cape Fear' (sampling heavily from the film of the same name) through the dense acidic 'Toll' to the sublime 'We Are The Future' which, thanks to its sluggish reversed strings, bouncy 4/4 kick and delicate piano, sits on the hinterlands between light and dark. The only downside is not the music but the slightly quiet pressing, the tracks are really crammed on there.Aside from that, this is a essential album that displays a crossroads in hard dance music in the mid-to-late 90s before jungle went intelligent, before techno went pretentious, before hardcore went cheesy.
