BB Gabor's self-titled debut surprises you with the fast smash of "Metropolitan Life," musings about living in the city that opens with a funny verse that sets the tone: "Gimmie half a minute and I'll tell you what I'm thinking / I get so excited when you're waving that knife / It's driving me crazy, but I know I can't blame you / For this urban madness: metropolitan life." I had this song first stuck in my head for days, catchy and melodic with energy to spare. And he wasn't afraid to use a knife of his own, either. The driving, mocking and slightly paranoiac "Soviet Jewellery"; the subtle capitalist jab of "Consumer"; the cheeky "Laser Love" with its electro beat and fade-out sci-fi voice telling disco off; the come-hither lounge jam of "Hunger, Poverty & Misery" that nearly sounds like Steely Dan having their own holiday in Cambodia. This guy was a diverse talent ranging from one type of genre to the next, all unified by the exciting, youthful sound of New Wave. He was also capable of some touching ballads, including "All the Time" and the unforgettable cover of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" that made me finally fall in love with the song.In short, BB Gabor is the one he'll be remembered for.
